I often think that I'd love to downsize and live smaller simpler lives too but it is hard to part with some of those sentimental things and then I start thinking what about seasonal decorations? I like to purge stuff often but there are still so many things I don't think I could ever part with-- like all my scrapbooks!
Ditto!! No way the scrapbooks are going anywhere. And all the scrapbooking supplies, too. When the time comes to really seriously downsize, I figure my scrapbooking days will be limited. But I am not there yet.
I love your little cabin Leslie. Tiny houses are a thing there and I always look at them and yearn to live in a small space where I couldn't accumulate 'stuff'. When I moved here almost without notice eighteen years behind I left almost everything behind, except for what would fit in my car. It was such a freeing feeling not to be shackled down with the stuff of life. However, lots of it has now crept back in and it really is difficult to make the decision on what goes. I read The Happiest Man on Earth and loved it, but it also made me sad. Eddie Jaku was an amazing man. I loved reading this
I read The Happiest Man on Earth because you recommended it. Thank you for that. He was an amazing man and rose above the circumstances of his early years to have a wonderful life.
Oh my goodness what a beautiful and heartfelt post Leslie. I was both saddened and gladdened as I read. STUFF is ridiculously special because of memories. We did quite a cull, so we thought, moving a few times in 10 years but there are still a few mementoes in boxes I have kept. Like the Fisher Price Dolls House and ALL the furniture that "may" be something a great grandchild might use..but so far "NONE" expected..ha! After Dad's death in late Feb 2024 my brother and I took 'stuff' with us..and also allowed any of Dad's grandkids to take mementoes that meant something to them. We were both not ready to do a final look at and disposal till recently and there was not that much but each held a memory.
I will you and PC well in your cleaning and clearing too.
I am not ready for an apartment yet...we are enjoying renting our small 3 bedroom house on one level but an apartment rental would likely be our next place. Yikes. We are in our mid 70s.
Ha!! We have the Fisher Price doll house, too!! Parted with the airport and parking garage but we still have the house. And every grandchild has played with it!!
I know you have moved several times in the last few years so you are bound to have lightened your load with each move. But then you get settled into your new space and need things that make it feel like home.
Because we live 1500 miles from where my mom was living when she died, I wasn't able to take much of the few things she had left after 4 moves in 10 years. My brother wound up taking everything he could, God bless him. Her coats, shoes, all kinds of things he couldn't possibly use. But he has now passed those things along to others who can use them. This fall I brought home a little snowman I had bought my mom as a decoration for her apartment entryway. My sister had kept it for me for 2 years until I could get it home. Loved having it a part of my holiday decor.
Glad you are enjoying your small home. We are in a home that is too big for us but was perfect when we moved in with children. Our next move will be an apartment, too. Probably assisted living but I am holding off until I just can't clean this place and get up and down the stairs.
Thanks for visiting!! Happy new year, sweet friend.
